UVR- ultra violet radiation is responsible for 90% of all skin cancers. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis and are responsible for the acceleration of aging. UVB radiation primarily affects the epidermis and is responsible for sunburn and tanning. Both UVA and UVB rays cause DNA damage and mutation, leading to abnormal cells and cancer.
Unfortunately, claims made that the biological need for sun for vitamin D production can be confusing to patients. Adequate amounts of vitamin D can be obtained through food and milk and through the amount of sun exposure received during normal daily activities, even while wearing sunscreen.
Tanning beds are considered even more dangerous than natural sun exposure because of the strength and type of UV rays used. Studies show that 20 minutesin a tanning bed is equivalent to 2 to 3 hours ofnatural sun! Undisputable research has linked tanning beds with basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma skin cancers.
Sun Protection used daily of broad-spectrum sunscreen is imperative to the prevention of skin cancer. In order for a product to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, avobenzone, ecampsule, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide must be included. Sunscreen must be reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or vigorous activity.
